The Power of Perspective

On the Disrupting the Drift podcast the other day, a listener wrote in with a question. He was facing serious turmoil in his life because of the choices that his business partner was making…

And he was wondering how to handle the situation.

What do you do when someone else’s behavior has a negative effect on your life?

It can be very inconvenient and stressful to be in this kind of situation.

Your first instinct may be to judge your partner and assign blame. You may feel resentful and fearful, and it’s tempting to assign yourself the role of “victim” in the situation.

However, this isn't helpful or productive. In fact, it's only adding to the difficulties and creating more resistance.

This is a situation where your perspective will make all the difference.

When you find yourself feeling frustrated and like the situation is out of your control, pause and take a moment to be present in the here and now.

Stop the mental chatter and drop into your body, opening your eyes and looking around at your life.

Recognize that you have a pulse and a heartbeat, and that you are still alive and able to handle this situation.

You may also realize that you missed some red flags along the way, and that you played a role in allowing this problem to escalate.

With this newfound perspective, you can take responsibility for your part in the situation and respond from a place of inner composure and strength.

Consider your own standards and boundaries, and think about what you are willing to put up with or tolerate.

It’s possible that, with some perspective and space to think about things with a clear head, there are solutions to the problem that will allow you to make things work without compromising your boundaries and needs.

Ultimately, you may also realize that you need to find a way out of this situation, as the other party needs to take care of themselves and you need to protect your own well-being.

By pausing, being present, and taking responsibility, you can handle this difficult situation and make a decision that is best for you.

Remember that in any challenging situation, it's important to stop, breathe, and be present in order to make the best choices for yourself!
